This Saturday at 10:00 we invite you join us at the shop or on Zoom for this month’s Hand Tool SIG.
This month we are going to change things around a little and we will have a guest speaker and presenter. It will be my pleasure to introduce you to someone you should get to know, our newest Woodwork Instructor.
Welcome Luther Shealy
Luther retired from the US Army as a Full Colonel and since then has gained stellar reputation as an instructor at Rob Cosman’s Hand Tool Workshops as well as Woodcraft of Seattle.
He is also one of the founders of the Purple Heart Project, a therapeutic program that provides injured veterans with high quality hand tool woodworking instruction with other veterans who have mastered the craft of hand tool woodwork. All the veteran’s expenses are paid by the PHP program.

Luther arrived in San Diego just a few weeks ago and will be splitting his time between San Diego and Seattle. In this short time we have known him he has already demonstrated his excellent teaching skills by refining, improving and teaching our Basic Sharpening class to rave reviews.
He will be teaching another two sharpening classes this month to our shift supervisors while working with the education team to improve and expand our hand tool instruction program. Look for more classes with him at the end of July and early in August. We will also asking him to schedule some classes in November and December. With this space!
Saturday's SIG Agenda
While many of us use pencils to mark out our work, in recent years I have found that correctly using marking gauges and knives helps me to be more precise because the line is very clearly defined, whereas a pencil mark tends to be a little fuzzy by comparison. By cutting the surface grain the gauge also acts as the first step in a cut. I still use my pencil but when I need pinpoint accuracy in marking, a gauge or marking knife is my go to tool.
This Saturday Luther teaches us what we need to know about marking gauges. He will talk about why and how we use marking gauges and knives in preference to pencil, as well as demonstrating their correct use. He will compare several different kinds of gauge and talk about their different applications.
After the presentation, he will hold a Q & A session to answer your questions about this and other aspects of woodwork.
I strongly recommend that you join our meeting if you have even the slightest interest in hand tool work. Luther has a way of teaching the craft that makes it very easy to learn and we look forward to learning new skills in his future classes.
