SDFWA is extremely please to announce that our speaker for the this general meeting will be MIRA NAKASHIMA. Below is the link to their website as well as excerpts.

https://nakashimawoodworkers.com

George Nakashima began his furniture business as a reactionary movement against the practice of twentieth century “modern” architecture, design, and art. Through his work he called for a reclamation of the the philosophy of earlier historical periods. With a solid background in architectural history and design, engineering, and building practice, George turned towards a simpler life in which direct contact with materials, tools, and clients and craftsmen were more important than the imposed egoism of the modern design world.

Mira Nakashima’s work grows from her father’s philosophical legacy and expresses her own profound admiration for nature and having livid in close contact with the wood that defines both her artistry and her daily experience. In her designs, Mira captures the form and spirit of the wood which is capable of transmitting its sensitivity, peace, and harmony into those who use it.

Speaker Joe Fleming

Introduction:
Joe Fleming is a full-time engineer and part-time woodworker and woodturner. He has been an amateur woodworker for over 45 years and an amateur woodturner for more than 20 years. His skills are primarily self-taught with assists from various class work, from woodworking publications, and through participation in various woodworking clubs. He has studied with many noted wood artists including, Allan Batty, Stuart Batty, Christian Burchard, Jimmy Clewes, Don Derry, Michael Hosaluk, John Jordan, Binh Pho, Richard Raffan, Merryll Saylan, and Susan Working. He gives credit to his dad for instilling a passion for hand-made wood items.
While Joe is a jack of all woodworking trades, he considers himself to be, primarily, a woodturner. He completes artistic pieces as well as taking a number of woodworking commissions every year. Recent work includes a custom walking cane, a chess set, and assorted (turned) gift boxes.
Joe is also a Grex airbrush dealer including airbrushes, accessories, paint and some Grex air tools. He also is a SaburrTooth carving dealer. In addition to retail sales, he offers in-person and on-line classes and demonstrations for airbrushing and woodturning.

SDFWA Presentation:
Joe will be explaining airbrush equipment, and will be demonstrating basic airbrush skills. The demonstration will include:
• Show some examples of airbrushed wood projects.
• Explain the benefits of airbrushing over other finishing techniques.
• What equipment you need for airbrushing and what equipment is nice-to-have.
• Explain the various materials you can spray.
• Explain wood preparation for airbrushing (sanding, filling, bleaching).
• Demonstrate some basic airbrushing skills (close-quarter and wide dispersal drills).
• Explain and/or demonstrate some practical examples of airbrushing for woodworkers (shading, coloring, tinting, highlighting grain, top coat application).
• A chance to try out an airbrush for yourself. Come early to try before the meeting starts.

Joe's Artistic Statement:
Woodworking provides me with an outlet for my creativity. I enjoy finding a piece of wood, envisioning what it can become, and then transforming it into a beautiful art or craft piece. I make both art pieces and functional pieces, but I always strive for beauty. My woodturning consists all types of turning disciplines including bowls, hollow forms, platters, vases, boxes and furniture components. I use a variety of wood species in my work including local urban forested woods like eucalyptus, and other reclaimed wood. I also use wood from certified forestry projects in the Pacific Northwest, Mexico and Australia.

Memberships:
• The San Diego Woodturners
• The San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association
• American Association of Woodturners

Program

Speaker Andy Goldman

I was raised in the Northeast, and was transferred to Orange County, California in 1976. I held several sales jobs bordering on woodworking and when I started my own sales agency in 1984, I concentrated on Woodworking Equipment and Supplies until retiring in December 2019.

About 5 years ago, I met Wayne Miller, President of the Segmented Woodturner’s Chapter of the AAW. He got me interested in Segmented Turning so I began to pursue Open Segmented Turning using my old turning tools. I spent a lot of time watching videos on the Internet on Segmented Turning and developed my own style. The bowls below are an example of my work.

I am proud that I have been able to donate all proceeds from the sales of my Open Segmented Bowls to Charities. Those donations have topped $55,000.

Guest Speaker: Paul Henry

Paul opened his first wood shop in Bicentennial Boston, 1976, and has worked in the furniture world ever since. For more than 40 years he has maintained the same studio in Carlsbad Village specializing in custom bespoke furniture and cabinetry, one of a kind work for galleries and museums, and antique repair and restoration. For 20 years he taught Furniture Design and History at Palomar College, and he is now a co-owner of Phes Gallery showing fine art and craft.  You can see more examples of his work here.

Program

He will be talking about “Antiques and the Stories That Furniture Can Tell”.

I have always been fascinated with old furniture and I find that with a bit of careful observation we can reconstruct the history of use, abuse, and alteration as well as the marks – and mistakes – of the original maker. I will present a series of a dozen or so examples and, following the evidence, try to reconstruct the story of how and why it came to look the way it does today.

  • The history of Murphy’s Fine Woodworking, specifically the Arts & Crafts movement;
  • How to encourage our younger members to pursue woodworking as an advanced hobby or career.

Craftsman Referral Terms

BACKGROUND
The San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association (SDFWA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to the education, promotion, and execution of the principles of fine woodworking.
The SDFWA frequently receives requests from people seeking the service of a woodworker. Therefore, although custom woodworking for hire is not the purpose of our organization, we offer this referral service to the public so that they might connect with a woodworker.

SCOPE
SDFWA does not screen or warrant the skills or work of any craftsman. The public should use their own discretion and due diligence before hiring any craftsman, from any source, including this one.
The sole role of SDFWA in this referral service is limited to providing our member woodworkers with your completed form. It is up to each craftsman to initiate a contact with the requester.

PROCEDURE
After a requester submits a project, the form will be emailed to our list of participating craftsmen. If a craftsman is interested in the project, they will contact the client directly, and a two-way conversation can begin.

As the craftsmen themselves choose which projects to respond to, this means that it is probable that some project requests will receive no response. If you do not receive a response in a reasonable time, please submit your request again, using the provided referral form.
Note that contacting SDFWA directly will not achieve the desired results.

DISCLAIMER
By agreeing to these Terms, and by continuing to submit this Referral Form, and by utilizing one or more of the services of any of these craftsmen, you are agreeing to contract exclusively with that individual craftsman and to defend, indemnify and hold harmless the SDFWA Organization, its officers, officials, employees and volunteers from any and all claims, injuries, damages, losses or suits including attorney fees, arising out of or in connection with the performance of this agreement, and any and all failures, damages, or otherwise negative outcomes caused directly or indirectly by the craftsmen you employ to do any project initiated by this Form. This does not preclude you from pursuing legal remedies from the individual craftsman that you employ. But any remedy you pursue is restricted to that individual craftsman, and does not include the SDFWA organization or any of its volunteer members.
