After a short breather, the Holiday Gift Build sessions have begun anew!
Members apply their time and talent to make product we sell at our annual Holiday Gift Sale. The sale is SDFWA's second largest source of funds so their efforts are critical to sustaining our operation. What participants in the weekly build sessions get are the chance to hone their skills, to spend time with other woodworkers and to contribute to the financial health of our association.
All the product they make requires wood, lots of wood.
Lumbercycle is an important supplier of our wood. They gather fallen trees from across San Diego county, haul the logs to their lumber yard in Ramona, where they dry and mill them for eventual repurposing. Their wood is given or sold to anyone who has a project that advances their mission and the wood ends up in park benches, planters, and, yes, wooden gifts sold at our annual sale.
The picture above is from our recent outing to supply the Member Shop with wood for this year's HGS. Tom Hamilton (left in the picture) is CEO of Lumbercycle. He has been incredibly supportive of SDFWA over the years and where possible we reciprocate. We non-profits need to help each other!
Gary Anderson, Alan Lewis, Scott Thompson and Travis Good arrived early. While the rest of us waited, Gary started roaming around the yard and uncovering piles of lumber. Occasionally we'd hear an “Oh!” or a “Wow!” from him; the guy was in seventh heaven … he was a woodworker version of a kid in a candy shop. It was kind of fun to witness. 😁
Tom soon arrived and showed us around. His familiarity with his wood is impressive, you can really tell he cares about what he does. Torrey Pine, Black Acacia, Walnut and so much more was available to us. After an hour we had filled two truck beds with wood and were happily heading to the shop with our bounty.
Like the SDFWA, Lumbercycle is a nonprofit. Like the SDFWA, Lumbercycle needs support from the community. While the wood they provided to our HGS was free, Lumbercycle wood is an exceptionally good value for local woodworkers. If you need to buy wood then reach out. You can contact Tom through Lumbercycle's Instagram presence.
Thank you Lumbercycle for propelling us forward!
