Presidential Update

Gary

Next two BOD meeting will be on 2nd Sundays: October 12 and November 9th

New Leadership
Steve Peterson – Membership Volunteer Coordinator. He will develop a system to track “who is doing what”, especially new members after their first 90 days. He will continue to support Nancy and Lynn.

Dan Taskalos – Communication Coordinator is responsible for communications that go to Membership. He is also responsible for Pro Class Calendar reflecting activities accurately.

Mathew Smith has been named the Community Involvement Coordinator. He will field, evaluate and respond to all requests for Community Involvement projects. Once they are approved by the Board, he will also be responsible for finding a Project Leader for each.

Travis Good has been named as Chairman of the Nominating Committee for the upcoming election.

Goals for 2025
Gary handed out a copy of the Goals the Board set for itself for 2025 and asked everyone to review the progress we’ve made and to keep the focus on the steps necessary to complete them all by the end of the year.

New Sponsor
Sawinery has new tool to scrape glue off of projects, will also provide 15% discount to SDFWA Members.

Website Update
Progress continues. We now have a new, cleaner Home Page. There will soon be a “Members Only” section as well.

Shop Tour
Taylor Guitar Shop Tour on September 16 is limited to 30 people and is full. No guests can be accommodated due to these restrictions placed on us by Taylor Guitars.

Proposal to Approve Erika Cheswick as VP

ALL

The Board voted unanimously to approve Erika Cheswick as VP for the remaining term in Ron Lacy’s place.

Treasurer Update

Pete

Pete e-mailed detailed Financial Report to BOD members previously. He provides a Financial Summary which will be posted on the Website. Members will have access to the Summary.

In addition, Pete presented a draft of a policy detailing the process for requesting and receiving reimbursement for purchases made on behalf of SDFWA. Input was made and a final draft will be emailed to Board Members.

2025 DIW Review

Jim

There were 258 entries according to Jim. The space can accommodate up to 300 entries. More Traditional and Contemporary furniture are needed (except chairs). Jim also says that the new set- up and tear-down are much better organized and more efficient with the Fair’s hired help.

Jim proposes a new category with “assisted builds”. Currently projects built with assistance from teachers are not eligible for submission to the Fair.

Jim needs help to increase high quality submissions. Gary recommends Jim to contact Teddy in Marketing.

Shop Update

Dallas

Shop 4.0 continues to be on-time and under budget, thanks to the many volunteers.

Events Team Update

Gary

Bernie has resigned leaving a need for a new Team Leader. There is general agreement that we need someone to take hold of the events issue and work on new ideas.

Steering Team Update

Pete

Proposal to initiate Fund-Raising Program (to support our long-term goal to build or buy our own building).

Much discussion led to a feeling that more information was needed before the Board could take action.

Further discussion is deferred until Gary confirm with Mary and John.

Membership Team Update

Erika

Membership Team provided a detailed memorandum to the Board of Directors and the Education Team. Membership Team has two proposals: 1) a 20% discount for active military members to take classes at SDFWA, and 2) Rosie Trone Memorial Scholarship to provide two $250 scholarships annually for Introduction to Woodworking A.

The next step is to ensure that Education is fully engaged and comfortable with these proposals. Erika will follow up.

Proposal to rename two of the SDFWA Scholarships as Rosie Trone Memorial Scholarship in accordance with the Membership was discussed and passed unanimously.

Annual Meeting

Gary

December 6 is the combined Eye Opener for November and December. We are looking for ideas to make the event really special.

SDFWA Organizational Plans for 2026 and beyond

Gary

Gary presented the first draft of a new Organizational Structure for SDFWA, citing the need for more Leaders and perhaps another layer or two in certain areas. Board Members were asked to study the issue and recommend any thoughts they may have.

Meeting adjurned at:

3:55 pm

Respectfully submitted,

Craftsman Referral Terms

BACKGROUND
The San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association (SDFWA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to the education, promotion, and execution of the principles of fine woodworking.
The SDFWA frequently receives requests from people seeking the service of a woodworker. Therefore, although custom woodworking for hire is not the purpose of our organization, we offer this referral service to the public so that they might connect with a woodworker.

SCOPE
SDFWA does not screen or warrant the skills or work of any craftsman. The public should use their own discretion and due diligence before hiring any craftsman, from any source, including this one.
The sole role of SDFWA in this referral service is limited to providing our member woodworkers with your completed form. It is up to each craftsman to initiate a contact with the requester.

PROCEDURE
After a requester submits a project, the form will be emailed to our list of participating craftsmen. If a craftsman is interested in the project, they will contact the client directly, and a two-way conversation can begin.

As the craftsmen themselves choose which projects to respond to, this means that it is probable that some project requests will receive no response. If you do not receive a response in a reasonable time, please submit your request again, using the provided referral form.
Note that contacting SDFWA directly will not achieve the desired results.

DISCLAIMER
By agreeing to these Terms, and by continuing to submit this Referral Form, and by utilizing one or more of the services of any of these craftsmen, you are agreeing to contract exclusively with that individual craftsman and to defend, indemnify and hold harmless the SDFWA Organization, its officers, officials, employees and volunteers from any and all claims, injuries, damages, losses or suits including attorney fees, arising out of or in connection with the performance of this agreement, and any and all failures, damages, or otherwise negative outcomes caused directly or indirectly by the craftsmen you employ to do any project initiated by this Form. This does not preclude you from pursuing legal remedies from the individual craftsman that you employ. But any remedy you pursue is restricted to that individual craftsman, and does not include the SDFWA organization or any of its volunteer members.
