Hand Tool SIG on Saturday 12/12/2020 at 10:00.
As this rather eventful year comes to a close we will have the last meeting this year of our group this Saturday.
When COVID 19 brought almost all SDFWA shop activities to a grinding halt, we had planned to present the new Hand Tool Group at the next general meeting, which was of course cancelled.
Within a fairly short time we decided to experiment with launching the group on Zoom. The SIG rapidly became a twice monthly event and has been meeeting regularly ever since.
We intend to continue this rythym in the new year and I am working on a few ideas for a progressive structure for the presentations. perhaps doing a complete progresssion from a rough sawn plank to a small finished piece.
This Saturday I want to demonstrate the hand tool evolution that I do the most frequently, making a simple edge or, butt joint.
David Weissman will also join us from Milwaukee to show and talk to us about this table that he made after the last SIG when we talked about making octagonal poles on the way to making round poles. He took the octogon theme and ran with it. Bravo David! Lovely work.
I once had a 6” jointer that took ten minutes to unstow and hook up to the power and another several minutes to put away again. After this I would have tiny chips and dust to clean up throughout the garage before carrying on.
Because I usually buy wood that has been milled on both faces and one edge, most of my jointing needs were on the edges and after the shop opened up I sold the Jointer and got a router table instead.

This meant that I would need to use hand tools to create edge joints at home which, for the small projects I do, is quicker, cleaner and much more satisfying than setting up and running an electric jointer.
In this meeting I will demo this technique in preparation for gluing two boards together and if there is time will clamp and glue them together.
Lewis and I look forward to seeing you this Saturday and wish you all avery Happy, Safe and Healthy Holidays and if you can’t be there this week, we will see you next year.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday.
