What a great feeling it is to make a difference!
The Diamond Neighborhoods of San Diego is situated just six miles from downtown and is a designated development district. With a majority low-income Hispanic/Latino population, during COVIC it's suffering more than most areas. We've been approached to help kids affected by the pandemic. Want to get involved?
With libraries closed and kids schooled at home, there are many needs. We've been approached to help by DEEP, a nonprofit specializing in education in the Diamond Neighborhoods. They've begun placing Little Free Libraries at local elementary schools but have run out libraries. Furthermore, they would like to get simple desks into the homes for kids to use for school work.
Talk about purposeful!
To start we'd just focus on a few Little Free Libraries. Leveraging our woodworking skills, our role would be to build and install them while DEEP would take care of all the permissions. We have the funding to get started if we can rally a team (or a few individuals) to build them. If building libraries goes well and we enjoy making a difference then we can move on to desk-making.
One of the beauties of such a project is creativity. There are so many design possibilities for Little Free Libraries. Our woodworking skills could allow us to produce something interesting or produce many efficiently, it's our choice. As for design ideas, to get your juices flowing I've found a site with 44 different designs and they're just the tip of the iceberg!
What better time to apply our woodworking skills for good?
