Toymaking and Cutout Program

Periodically, all day toy-making workshops bring members together to produce wooden toys. This is a great way for new memebers to get involved. Each year we donate over 3000 toys to various charitable organizations. Individuals also produce and distribute thousands of scroll saw cutouts each year.

New Customer For Kids' Cutouts

Jack Thurman has delivered hundreds of scrollsawn cutouts to Children's Hospital over the past few years, so he reasoned that Balboa Naval Hospital's young patients could also use a few to help them cope with the boredom that comes with being away from home and ill.

He filled a couple of boxes with a variety of animals, pilgrims, pumpkins, stars and flowers and made a surprise visit to Balboa's Ward 2 East where staffers met him with open arms. He delivered additional cutouts and memory boxes a few weeks later, and on that occasion met the rest of the Pediatrics counseling staff. A few days later the following arrived in the mail:

Dear Woodworkers,
The staff and children at Balboa Naval Medical Center want to express our thanks to you all for the wonderful wood pieces. They are so beautiful and the children love to paint them. They bring so much joy to these very sick boys and girls. We thank you for thinking of us and donating these creative pieces.
Sincerely,
Balboa Pediatrics Staff, 2 East.

Jack has hundreds of patterns and lots of wood, and asks that you lend a hand in this endeavor. Let him know of additional places where sick children might enjoy painting the wooden shapes our Association can provide. Call him at 619-232-4626 or see him at any general meeting to pick up plans or wood.
