Hello All,
Well, we have one more general meeting before the Design in Wood
Show at the San Diego County Fair. This year is certainly going
by fast! We really need more volunteers to help set up beginning
May 18th and to "walk the floor" and work in the chair
shop. You can sign up at the meeting or on line at http://www.sdfwa.org/diwvolunteersched.html.
It is an opportunity to talk with people about woodworking and all
the wonderful pieces on display. I will be pulling two shifts walking
the floor this year and am really looking forward to it!
SDFWA in proud to once
again provide scholarships to talented woodworkers at Palomar Community
College and students at local high schools. Two dollars of every
membership dues collected goes into the scholarship fund. Russ Filbeck
and Hurley Dodd, our co chairs for the scholarship committee have
been hard at work making sure deserving students are rewarded for
their efforts. The awards will be presented at the Year End Awards
feast on May 29th at the Palomar College CFT classroom and shops.
Bring a main course dish and come see the many projects completed
this year in the many courses offered in this fine woodworking program!
There is also a drawing for many donated prizes for those who bring
a food dish to the event.
Our vice president, Robert
Threm was able to procure about 200 cans of finishing products to
offer to our members at a very reasonable price. These products
are used by many top woodworkers such as Ken Minasian, a local guitar
builder and Tom Thorton, box builder extraordinaire. Both Ken and
Tom have given presentations at SDFWA meetings on their particular
interest and talents. If you have seen their spectacular work, then
you have seen the finishing products in their final form. These
are top quality products and we full expect to sell them out at
this meeting. Come early for best selection. When it gone, it's
gone. Many thanks for Robert for putting this deal together!!
You know, there are a
lot of businesses and companies that make SDFWA a success. In addition
to the many services and discounts we receive from them, some sponsors
do even more. Last month I told you about the Rockler parking lot
event where SDFWA and the other woodworking clubs demonstrated their
skill and expertise. This month I would like to tell you about a
sponsor in particular who has provided "behind the scenes"
assistance. The Hardwood and Hardware Store(TH&H) on Activity
Rd in San Diego has allowed the SDFWA board to hold its bi monthly
meeting at their store for years free of charge. This requires one
of the employees to stay late at work after hours to provide this
space for us. I wanted to extend a personal thank you to Tom and
Jeff for all the late evenings you have stayed and provided us with
a space to meet. We really appreciate the use of the space and the
money it saves us. I would like to encourage our members to support
TH&H. Their generosity results in more of your membership dues
coming back to you in the form of activities and services. Thank
you TH&H!
As many of you are aware,
we donate the toys made in our toy program to local charities. Jim
Vitale, our pro bono chair person suggested at a recent bard meeting
that we solicit the membership for suggestions of worthy local charitable
organizations who may benefit from receiving toys from us. Does
your church or community activity center have a children's center
that could put some of the toys we make to good use? We would love
to hear suggestions from you.
I think SDFWA is a great
organization. I continue to be honored and privileged to serve as
your president. I look forward to continuing to provide activities
and opportunities to the membership. I hope you will continue to
promote our fine association and encourage others to join us in
our endeavors and the many incentives we provide our membership.
See you at the meeting!
